Week 1: Painting with Household Objects
During Week 1, participating students were introduced to artist Jarrett Key. Participants learned about Key's background; how they were born and raised in the Chattahoochee Valley before leaving the area to attend college. Participants spent time looking closely and discussing Hair Painting No. 29. After viewing a video of the live performance of Jarrett Key creating Hair Painting No. 29 at The Columbus Museum, students were introduced to a variety of household objects and discussed ways to paint without using a traditional paintbrush. Using household objects that included potato mashers, apple cutters, a variety of kitchen sponges and scrub brushes of made of different materials, toothbrushes, small strainers, and artificial flowers to apply tempera paint to paper, students delved into a creative exploration of making art with nontraditional materials.
Participants learned "I can paint," "that putting two colors together will make the color change," "to have fun," "paint with all the things because I super love painting," "trying new things is fun," "that an artist paints with hair," and "I want to be an artist when I grow up,"
