Week 2: Watercolor Experiments
For Week 2, participants explored liquid watercolor by experimenting with different application techniques. Students used pipettes to apply drops of watercolor, straws to blow the watercolor across the paper, and spray bottles filled with traditional liquid watercolors and metallic watercolors. They experimented with salt-course salt versus fine salt-adding a fun science component to the activity. Students observed the chemical reaction between salt and watercolor: how the salt absorbs the water, but leaves the color pigment behind, creating exciting and unique texture in their paintings. The session began with a discussion of artist Jarrett Key and Hair Painting No. 29. Students reflected on his application of paint as they created paintings without a paintbrush.
